Resolution
The participants to the first International Congres on the genus Testudo are
seriously concerned by current levels of traffic of tortoises. These animals,
listed in CITES Appendices I and II, which has been ratified by your country,
are gathered in great numbers and sold illegally to foreign tourists.
This collecting is a major threat to the equilibrium of natural tortoise populations
in your country, and is seriously prejudicial to your natural heritage.Traffic
in tortoises also represents a risk for animal health in other countries of
the Mediterrenean region.
The participants urge you to take appropriate action to stop this exploitation
which causes serious damage to your natural biodiversity and heritage, and also
to stop the illegal exportation of such animals by tourists.
